Base Conversion Basics

This tool converts numbers between bases (2‑36). Understanding the process helps you work with binary, octal, decimal, hexadecimal and other numeral systems.

Positional Notation

Each digit represents a value multiplied by its base raised to a power based on its position:

digit × baseⁿ + digit × baseⁿ⁻¹ + … + digit × base⁰

Example (Hex → Decimal)

1A₁₆ = 1×16¹ + 10×16⁰ = 26₁₀

Target Base Conversion

To convert a decimal number to another base, repeatedly divide by the target base, recording the remainders. The remainders read backwards form the result.

For example, converting 26₁₀ to hexadecimal:

26 ÷ 16 = 1 remainder 10 (A)
1 ÷ 16 = 0 remainder 1 (1)

Result: 1A₁₆
